Before you can learn to drive you need...

....To be 17 years old (unless registered disabled) and have a signed provisional driving licence for the category of vehicle you intend to drive for manual or automatic. 

You can apply for your provisional licence up to three months before your 17th birthday. To obtain a licence, visit the Post Office, and send off the application forms - a D1 and the new photo licence application form D750.

You will need your provisional driving licence before you can take any lessons. Using a professional instructor is best, but you may wish to practice in another vehicle if accompanied by someone who is at least 21 years old and has held a full driving licence for at least 3 years. You must display 'L' plates at the back and front of the car.
